It’s a really touching story of the emotional impact music can have on a human being. Whether it’s a small child, or an elderly man, the memories flow through our ears in the form of music. It animates us. It places us in an entirely different mood.

It’s almost magic. It’s “the quickening art” that can touch our hearts. In the case of Henry (from above), it totally changes his state of mind. He goes from being nearly unresponsive to the world around him, to being involved and outgoing with other people. He’ll even sing to people.

Henry essentially “reacquired” his identity from hearing his favorite music. It’s amazing.

“It gives me the feeling of love, of romance. I figure right now the world needs to come into music, singing. You’ve got beautiful music here.”

Alive Inside is a documentary that studies music therapy and it’s effects on elderly people. The study examines the quality of life of nursing home patients, especially for those who suffer from degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. As you can see from the preview above, patents spring into life, and awaken from what is otherwise an almost lifeless state.

The screening dates are Wednesday, April 18th through Saturday, April 21st, with two additional screenings on Saturday. Each ticket includes a Q&A with Alzheimer’s specialists and a post-program information table staffed by experts from the Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter. More information can be found at the Rubin Museum website.

Does this same effect happen to you? Do you find yourself with a new sense of life when you hear your favorite songs? What sorts of music do you enjoy listening to, and what device do you use to listen with? Share your experiences in the comments below.
