If you’re one of those awesome people who bought a factory unlocked iPhone from Apple… good for you.

For the rest of you who have been waiting to use your iPhone 4S on unapproved carriers around the world, that day is nearly here.

GEVEY has announced the Ultra S unlock for the GSM iPhone 4S. Unlike the locked iPhone bought from Apple, AT&T, or your carrier of choice with a subsidized price on a contract agreement, GEVEY Ultra S is going to allow the device to work on any GSM carrier worldwide. The $55 solution cost a hell of a lot less than buying one full price. Of course, if you update software later, it may no longer be compatible with GEVEY, so be careful.

The same is true when unlocking your iPhone with Ultrasn0w software, currently something that perhaps millions of people have been waiting months to be able to do. iPhone 4 and 3GS users have had Ultrasn0w as a stable and reliable unlocking method for a long time, but many reading this now know full well of the risk when it comes to updating devices: Just don’t do it, unless you are 100% sure it’s still going to work later.

iPhone 4S users haven’t had a way to unlock their devices yet, and have been eagerly waiting for the Dev Team’s progress on Ultrasn0w. Until that time, GEVEY Ultra S will be the only way to do it, and it’s not free. It also does not require a jailbreak, and it’s very easy to use. There are advantages and disadvantages to it, but overall users of the iPhone 4S will feel its money well spent.

There have been some wonderful enhancements and improvements to GEVEY Ultra S as well. There’s a re-engineered interposer, allowing awesome “plug and play” functionality. You’ll literally be able to pop in GEVEY Ultra S, and unlock the phone with the original sim card. Simple as that.

In the past, users had to cut their SIM cards, or physically modify them manually in order for available tools to work for them. Not anymore. This time, it just works. The GEVEY interposer is small enough to fit into the iPhone just right.

Keep in mind that there is no guarantees that this tool will make your phone work on every single GSM network around the world. The GEVEY Ultra S is only for the iPhone 4S on GSM networks, and will not allow use on unapproved CDMA networks. This usually isn’t a big deal for more people, since most of the networks around the world are GSM networks. For example, T-Mobile USA is GSM based, so GEVEY Ultra S will allow usage for T-Mobile. Sprint and Verizon, however, are CDMA-based networks, and so an iPhone will not be able to migrate to those networks using this tool. You’d have to actually buy a Verizon or Sprint iPhone for that.

Here’s a demo…

One other great feature of the new GEVEY Ultra S, is something called “learning mode”, in which GEVEY attempts to learn the configuration of your network, and just unlock the device easily. The hope is to make everything easy for the end-user. Most importantly, GEVEY Ultra S does not dial any emergency numbers to do its business. Up until now, HotTips! hasn’t recommended the use of GEVEY tools, because of the illegality of using emergency numbers in order to activate devices.

This one doesn’t do it, therefore… get out there and get that phone unlocked!

iPhone 4S devices running iOS 5.0 or 5.0.1 with the baseband values of 1.0.11, 1.0.13, or 1.0.14 are all compatible with GEVEY Ultra S, so if you are sitting on one of these configurations, and you need an unlock for your device, DO NOT UPDATE.

You can check your baseband values by navigating to Settings.app > General > About >   and then see the value for “Modem Firmware”)

Applenberry is taking pre-orders for the Ultra S now, with shipments expected to arrive between March 3-7.
