North Korea has said that there will be big consequences for the United States if a movie depicting two men tasked with the assassination of Kim Jong-un is allowed to be released, claiming it would be “an act of war.” The movie, titled “The Interview,” is a comedy featuring James Franco and Seth Rogen, two well-known celebrity actors who have partnered for many movies in the past. Usually, when North Korea threatens to do anything, the people of the United States are somewhat cautions to take such things seriously, but still remain attentive.

In the action-comedy The Interview, Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show “Skylark Tonight.” When they discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un.

As the BBC reports, North Korea has promised “merciless” retaliation if the Hollywood movie is released, say agencies.

The North Korea spokesman was quoted by the state KCNA news agency as saying: “Making and releasing a movie on a plot to hurt our top-level leadership is the most blatant act of terrorism and war and will absolutely not be tolerated.”

He added that the “reckless US provocative insanity” of mobilising a “gangster filmmaker” to challenge the North’s leadership was triggering “a gust of hatred and rage” among North Korean people and soldiers. “If the US administration allows and defends the showing of the film, a merciless counter-measure will be taken,” the spokesman was quoted as saying.

North Korea has been known to make similar threats before, and at most it’s likely they could retaliate against US allies, and/or the people of other countries. The chances of any action taken against the United States itself is pretty unlikely. However, military action isn’t the only type of retaliation North Korea is capable of. They’ve been known to kidnap people from all over the world. I doubt they’d ever manage to kidnap or kill James Franco or Seth Rogen (who is Canadian).

Seth Rogen, who is also one of the directors of The Interview, responded on Twitter with his usual humor, saying “People don’t usually wanna kill me for one of my movies until after they’ve paid 12 bucks for it.
