Cydia, the store responsible for all the wonderful things your jailbroken iPhone can do, only guarantees that it will save a jailbreak-able SHSH Blob for your device. It doesn’t promise to do it automatically for every firmware. So, if you wish to downgrade later to a previous firmware, you’ll want to make sure that you can get there.

All jailbreakers should be aware of this method. It’s crucial that they understand this. If you ever want to downgrade, this process needs to have ALREADY BEEN DONE in the past. Navigate below for more, and we’ll walk you through it.

Why Is It Important?

Apple only signs the latest firmware available. This causes a problem, since any restore requires validation with them… or does it? Actually, it does require validation to process, but what many aren’t aware of is that it doesn’t have to come from Apple! Save your SHSH Blobs with Tiny Umbrella, and you’re good to go. You won’t have to worry later!

Frequently Asked Questions

From thefirmwareumbrella website:

Q: What is TinyUmbrella?
A: It does two things:

  • Requests SHSH signatures for firmware restores
  • Plays back those signatures enabling iTunes to continue the restore

Q: What is an SHSH?
A: An SHSH is a secure signature hash. Basically its a unique key. (To avoid a lengthy discussion).

Q: Why do I need SHSHs?
A: Apple only allows you to restore to the firmwares they ‘sign’. This ‘signing’ only lasts for a limited time. Once they stop ‘signing’ the SHSHs for a firmware, there is no way to restore that firmware ever again.

Q: I have X.X.X on my iphone/ipod/ipad/appletv why can’t I just restore that version to my iphone/ipod/ipad/appletv?
A: Once Apple stops signing that firmware version, there is no way to get the SHSH that will allow the restore to continue. Just like you can’t go back in time and invent Google. It’s done. It is in the past.

Before You Start

Before you can save your SHSH Blobs, you’ll need:

1) An iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.

2) You’ll need to download and/or Install Tiny Umbrella

HOW TO SAVE SHSH BLOBS

Step 1: Connect iPhone to Computer. If iTunes doesn’t open Automatically, don’t worry about it (it’s not needed).

Step 2: Locate and Open Tiny Umbrella (downloaded previously from the “Before you Start” section).

Step 3: Now that your device is connected, you should see it on the Sidebar. Click It (Arrow)

Step 4: Once the device has been selected, Click “Save SHSH Blobs” on the right (circled)

Step 5: Once this has completed, You will be able to see all of the SHSH blobs that are currently saved. You will then be able to Downgrade to any of those firmware versions (there are additional steps to actually downgrade). If you would like to know how to do that, CLICK HERE.
