With court cases on Apple v Samsung raging across the world, and the U.S. is set to become the next battleground. The trial will start Monday, July 30, but the case has been going on for the past 15 months. The result of all this pre-trial busy work? A small group of people are becoming filthy rich(er).
As a result of a motion filed by Samsung demanding Apple pay certain fees, and a similar one by Appple a couple of months ago, figures are coming to light for the first time. Apple’s lawyers (from Morrison Foerster) are being paid an average of $526 per hour, while Samsung’s lawyers (from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, a law firm often working for Google) are being paid slightly more, $592 per hour. I knew I should’ve gone to law school.
It’s important to note that these numbers are only for small chunks of time; hundreds of hours of work, but a small percentage of the 15 months. It’s only a guess how many millions of dollars will be spent by the two giants when the dust settles, and whether or not it will affect product prices. Whatever may happen in the future, if the case doesn’t settle by Monday, a panel of jurors will be selected what will most likely be the simultaneously most interesting and most boring court case ever.
